【Overview】
Amadeus Code Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Jun Inoue; hereinafter referred to as “Amadeus Code”) has conducted an intervention study in collaboration with Professor Masayuki Sato from the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Graduate School Dementia and Neuropsychology Course (currently at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology) and the Yamaha Music Foundation, aiming to prevent dementia through the “Otokai” program. This study is the first in the world to demonstrate that using AI-generated music, combined with a text-to-music transformation process, and continuing a 60-minute weekly music intervention program over six months, can improve the frontal lobe functions of the elderly. Based on this evidence, Amadeus Code has developed the “Otokai” app, which was selected as a project under the “FY2023 Tokyo Strategic Innovation Promotion Program” by the Tokyo Metropolitan Small and Medium Enterprise Support Center. A large-scale intervention trial using this app is scheduled to be conducted starting in January 2025.
The results of this research were published in the American scientific journal “Brain and Behavior” on September 6, 3:00 AM (Japan time).

【Key Points】
- “Otokai” is a music intervention program incorporating AI-generated music through a text-to-music transformation process, offering a new non-pharmacological approach to dementia prevention.
- The study demonstrated that Otokai can improve the frontal lobe function of elderly participants.
- The Otokai app, developed based on these findings, is expected to promote more effective dementia prevention accessible to people worldwide.
【Background of the Study】
With Japan’s aging population, it is predicted that by 2030, approximately 5.23 million people, or 1 in 7 individuals aged 65 and over, will have dementia. Currently, there is no established cure for most diseases that cause dementia, and once diagnosed, a patient’s quality of life significantly declines. Therefore, preventing and slowing the progression of dementia is essential for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. In Japan’s super-aging society, dementia countermeasures have become a priority social and economic issue, given the shortage of caregivers and rising healthcare costs.
In response, we focused on the culturally accessible activity of “music,” specifically “composition,” which engages multiple cognitive functions such as memory and thinking. We believe that engaging in composition may contribute to the re-consolidation of memories and re-experiencing success linked to positive memories, thereby maintaining and enhancing cognitive functions in the elderly.
This research aims to leverage AI technology to make composition—a skill that once required specialized training—accessible to everyone and use it as a dementia prevention tool. Additionally, it fosters social interaction through sharing self-created music works, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of communication skills.
This is an initiative to verify the effectiveness of music-based activities in preventing dementia.
